Lyrics

Sunset Highway

This car feels like a prison i’m trapped by locks and doors

Coming back from lonesome with my pride on the floor
I should have never walked away I didn’t mean to make her cry
I’ve been hiding from both of us with no good reason
Why no good reason why

Sunset highway don’t make a turn
I’ve got to right the wrong
I lost my heart down many a road
But never like this before
Sunset highway take me home

Time is running out and i’m still pushing through
I remember what she said about doubt and the shadows of truth
That ol’ devil is in my past with all his wild familiar kind
I made a promise and i’m keeping it she’s getting closer all the time
Getting closer all the time

Is there a storm on the horizon that I can’t go around
With auroras in the skies i’ve got four wheels on the ground
Can it be she’s undecided or is our love still strong
Heaven help me if i’ve stayed away too long

Deep in the night I swear I hear her voice
When I turn she’s not in sight and I see the only choice
She’s always part of me like the sky holds the blue
Love’s the only thing that matters and the only thing that’s true
The only thing that’s true

Old Man On The Pier

A week ago saturday a mexican dove

Came calling through my window what i’d been dreaming of
Said go to the shore slow your pace
Let the sky lift your blues let the sun rain on your face

A postcard day a silver lake magnolia in the air
And there along the water line a lone forsaken pier
Walking near the edge I couldn’t help but feel the life
Of something in the wood that time bleached white

Old man on the pier how long have you been here
There’s no one around to count the years
Though I never met you I recall who you are
Old man on the pier

Summers on the water everyone who knew this place
Three generations strong in his love embrace
Children played seasons passed leaving scars behind
A few knew the old man and a few had been unkind

He talked of growing old and how good life had been
He said he wouldn’t change a thing if he could do it all again
I listened to his tale I felt the strenghth of his will
The last thing he said to me was peace be still

When The Stars Come Out

Yet another full moon has come and gone

Since I last saw your face
When I think of you all alone
I lose my place
It looks like you’re letting go
But i’m holding on for more dance

When the stars come out
I feel the pain
And I wonder if i’ll ever
Lay eyes on you again

If it’s freedom you want to run and play
I never held you down
Is this the way we choose to move on
And loose the love we found
Now your friends say find somebody new
What I miss the most comes around at night

If you ever look to the sky
A billion miles is all you may find
Or you may see you may remember me
As in our eyes the same starlights shine
Another full moon has come and gone
Since you slipped out of my life
Thinking of you half way through
Another endless night
This broken heart can’t take much more
What was once so clear I don’t understand

Dimes Worth

I love to hear live music

I never miss a chance
Always in the band
I never learned to dance
We knew each other once as kids
But we really didn’t know
How good it was together
Until we let it go

And it’s good to see you here
It’s like old times when you’re here
How’d we get so restless and strange
Everybody makes mistakes
And I don’t think it’s too late
But if you want a dime’s worth of answers
I’ve got to give you some change

You asked me where i’ve been
And why I did not write
I remember what I said back then
But it don’t make sense tonight
I can’t explain everything
Or why i’m on the move
And the more we talk it over
I see a different point of view
I recall your face
But I forgot the name
Now where was that place
In time you’ll understand
That the one I put before me
Is the one i’m going to stand behind
We got another chance
To make up for lost time

What Was It

What was it you said about love

And how it was meant to be
Take it for better take it for worse
But please don’t take it away from me

I guess I pushed you to the limit
I never noticed the signs
Lord help us now that we’re in it
I’ll always be here whatever you decide

You used to wake me with kisses
But now you slam the door
And all those things you tell me that you’re missing
I just can’t seem to give you anymore

There’s a touch of innocence
When you’re the first to say goodbye
I took you at your word when I heard
I’ll love you till I die

What was it you said about love
And how we were meant to be
Take it for better take it for worse
But please don’t take it away from me

What was it you said about love
And how we were meant to be
Take it for better take it for worse
But don’t take it from me

Take it for better take me for a fool
But please don’t take it from me

I've Got Nothing

I used to go out all the time

But I never scored too high
I used to be so important to me
But I just can’t remember why

Now i’ve got nothing
I’ve got nothing
I’ve got nothing better to do
Than to love you

I finally got up all my nerve
To tell you how I felt
But you must not have heard me
‘cause you thought I was somebody else

My papa thinks his boy is lazy
Mama said son you’re amazing
Baby you’re driving me crazy
I ain’t always right but I ain’t always wrong

It’s been my job working overtime
I did the best I could
I’ve been trying to make you mine
‘cause I know it’ll do us both good

It wasn’t so very long ago
You were too busy to see
But that’s all changed i’m a happy man now
‘cause I heard what you said to me

You said you’ve got nothing
You’ve got nothing
Said you’ve got nothing better to do
Than to love me

You’ve got nothing better to do than to love me
And i’ve got nothing better to do than to love you too

devil woman

I told mary about us
Told her about our great sin
Mary just cried and forgave me
Said she take me back again
She said if I wanted my freedom
I could be free ever more
But I don’t want to be
And I don’t want to see mary cry anymore

Mary is waiting and weeping
Down in our shack by the sea
Even after I hurt her
Mary’s still in love with me
Devil woman its over
Trapped no more by your charm
I don’t want to stay
I’ve got to get away woman let go of my arm

Devil woman devil woman let go of me
Devil woman let me be
Leave me alone
I want to go home

Devil woman you’re evil
Like the dark coral reef
Like the wind that brings high tide
Ou bring sorrow and grief
You made me ashamed to face mary
Barely had the strength to tell
Skies are not so black
Mary took me back mary has broken your spell

Running alone by the sea
Running as fast as I can
Even the seagulls are happy
Glad i’m coming home again
Never again will I ever
Cause another tear to fall
Down the beach I see what belongs to me
The one I want most of all

Nothing But Everything

THE SUN STILL RISES IN THE MORNING

CHURCH BELLS STILL RING TO MARK THE HOUR
AND I STILL GO WALKING THROUGH THE CITY
AND NOW AND THEN THE GARDEN GROWS A FLOWER

IT’S STILL RAINING LIKE IT USED TO
AND EVERY YEAR THERE’S STILL A SPRING
NOTHING’S CHANGED SINCE YOU LEFT
NOTHING BUT EVERYTHING

CHILDREN STILL PLAY ALONG THE SIDEWALK
NOW AND THEN THE NEIGHBORS HAVE A FIGHT
MOM AND DAD STILL CALL ME EVERY SUNDAY
AND I SAY THE PRAYER EVERY NIGHT

IT’S STILL RAINING LIKE IT USED TO
AND EVERY YEAR THERE’S STILL A SPRING
NOTHING’S CHANGED SINCE YOU LEFT
NOTHING BUT EVERYTHING

NOW THERE’S NO REFLECTION OF SUNLIGHT IN YOUR EYES
EVERY HOUR IS ANOTHER HOUR ALONE
WHEN I GO WALKING THERE’S NO ONE TRADING FOOTSTEPS
AND I DON’T CARE IF THE FLOWERS TURN TO STONE

I’M STILL TRYING TO FIND MY FORTUNE
I’M STILL OPEN TO ANY GIFT THAT FATE MY BRING
NOTHING’S CHANGED SINCE YOU LEFT
NOTHING BUT EVERYTHING

NOTHING’S CHANGED SINCE YOU LEFT
NOTHING BUT EVERYTHING

The Ballad Of Aubrey Call

HE WAS SEEN IN MENDOCINO
OR WAS IT MATAGORDA BAY
HE HIT THE JACKPOT AT COUSHATTA
AND A BEACH IN HANALEI
THERE WAS A RUMOR OF A TWIN
BACK WHERE HE CAME FROM
HOW ELSE COULD HE BE
IN TWO PLACES AT ONCE

SOME SAY AUBREY MARRIED MONEY
OTHERS SAID HE GOT A JOB
MAYBE HE JOINED THE PEACE CORPS
MAYBE RUBBED OUT BY THE MOB
THEN THE STORY OUT OF SAN JUAN
ABOUT A LOCAL GIRL WITH CHILD
AND HOW HE CAUGHT THE RED EYE TO ANTIGUA
TO LAY LOW AWHILE

LIVING ON A SHOESTRING
LOOKING FOR A BRASS RING
HE ALWAYS SAT WITH HIS BACK TO THE WALL
NEVER GOING NOWHERE FAST
HOPING HIS LUCKY STREAK WOULD LAST
IT WAS THE ROUNDERS LIFE FOR AUBREY CALL

HE WAS A MAN OF INTEREST THE PAPER SAID
SOMETHING ABOUT FOOLS GOLD
ABOUT THAT TIME HE GOT HARD TO FIND
HIS TRAIL TURNED COLD
HE HAD A READY SMILE AN EASY STYLE
AND A COOL BREEZE AT HIS BACK
WE CALLED HIM FRIEND HE CALLED NE’ER DO WELLS
AND THEN WE’D ALL LOSE TRACK

HE MET A PRETTY SPITFIRE
WE DIDN’T KNOW HER REAL NAME
SHE DIDN’T CARE ABOUT HIS LEGEND
SHE WOULD NOT BE TAMED
WELL HE FELL SO HARD IT BROKE HIS HEART
AND THAT’S WHAT REIGNED HIM IN
NO MORE SKIPPING TOWN
HE FOUND TRUE LOVE IN THE END

WELL NO MORE ROUNDERS LIFE FOR YOUNG AUBREY CALL

We Can't Stop Now

I REMEMBER MAMA AND PAPA WHEN I WAS SMALL
ALONE IN THE DARK LISTEN TO THE TALK COMING DOWN THE HALL
PAPA WOULD SAY WE GOT BILLS TO PAY AND MOST ARE OVERDUE
MAMA SAID TRY NOT TO WORRY OUR LOVE WILL SEE US THROUGH
WE CAN’T STOP NOW
DARLING WE CAN’T STOP NOW
NO MATTER WHAT WE DO
WE CAN’T STOP NOW
THE FIRST TIME I SAW MY OWN CHILD I WAS SCARED AS I COULD BE
‘CAUSE WE NEEDED A CAR I NEEDED BETTER JOBS AND BOTH OF YOU NEEDED ME
SO MANY TIMES I WONDER NOW WHAT MAKES A MAN SAY GRACE
THE ANSWER LIES IN YOUR EYES AND IN THAT LITTLE BABY’S FACE
WE CAN’T STOP NOW
DARLING WE CAN’T STOP NOW
NO MATTER WHAT WE DO
WE CAN’T STOP NOW
THERE’S SOMETHING ABOUT YOU BABY
THAT I CAN’T GET TOO MUCH OF
IT MAY BE THE WAY YOU MAKE EVERYDAY
FEEL LIKE IT’S OUR FIRST DAY IN LOVE
ALL THE LITTLE TROUBLES THAT YOU AND I MUST OVERCOME
SEEM SO MONUMENTAL I JUST WANT TO GIVE UP AND RUN
WE’VE GOT TO STAY TOGETHER AND DON’T GIVE IN TO THE BLUES
WHAT WE’VE GOT IS BETTER AND THAT’S WHY I SAY TO YOU
WE CAN’T STOP NOW
